CATALOG DESCIRPTION:
An overview of physical, social/emotional, cognitive and language development from conception to age five.  The significance of family, peers, school and culture will be emphasized and practically applied to the young childâs individual development.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  For courses approved by ICCB, it is presumed students will spend a minimum of 2 hours outside study for each hour in class in order to meet the following objectives.

Students will:
-Describe developmental characteristics of children in the physical/motor,
   emotional/psychological, cognitive, social creative and language domains.
-Identify developmental delays.
-Identify importance of self-esteem and describe ways to foster its growth.
-Explain the role of play and ways to encourage it.
-Begin to describe major theorists and educational models recognized in the field of Early
  Childhood.
-Define the role of culture in development.

REQUIRED TEXT:
Developmental Profiles, Pre-Birth Through Eight, Allen, Eileen K., Marotz, Lynn R., Delmar Publishers, Albany, New York, 1999, third edition.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
-  Read all assigned readings in text and handouts.
-  Attendance and participation in class.  You loose points with every absence.
(see attached absenteeism policy)
-  In-class exams are to be taken on noted dates.  (See attached late work and missed test
      policy)  No assignment will be accepted more than two weeks after its original due
      date.
-  The first day of class secure yourself a ăbuddyä.  If you are absent your ăBuddy can
      can share class notes and handouts for you providing you with all the information you
      missed.
