ESL College Writing II

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Designed for ESL students to improve basic writing skills. This course emphasizes increasing competence in writing multiparagraph essays.

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS REQUIRED: 8 week Newsweek magazine subscription, a pocket folder in which to keep Newsweek magazines, one 3 1/2" disk.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Students will spend a minimum of 2 hours outside study for each hour in class in order to :
 

  • generate ideas and gather supporting evidence
  • analyze an audience and purpose and adapt a message to those needs
  • develop a specific, well focused thesis statement
  • plan, organize, and outline an effective draft 
  • review and revise drafts
  • incorporate material from various, appropriate 
  • sources using appropriate documentation analyze, interpret, and evaluate a variety of sources and readings
  • demonstrate satisfactory control over the conventions of standard edited American English
  • demonstrate acceptable ethical standards in research and presentation of material
  • use evidence and reasoning in writing
  • use word processing programs in the composition process
