Course Objective:

Develop ability to write and edit standard English; to utilize the principle elements of effective writing--organization and logical expression of ideas, clear sentence structure, appropriate style and vocabulary, and correct usage of grammar, mechanics, and spelling; to read your work, the work of your peers, and published work with critical perception; to develop appropriate research methods in the organization and documentation of a written research project.

Keep in mind: this class is fully transferable to all colleges and universities.Κ The quality of the work must match that standard.Κ Also, a major objective of this course is to prepare you for English 102.Κ If it does not do so, passing the course is pointless.

You should: attend class regularly; pay attention in class; do all of the required assignments in class and out; ask for help if you need it.

In class writing/participation:

You will read a number of essays, affording particular attention to supporting materials used by the author, structure of the discourse, tone, and the persuasiveness of the work as a whole.Κ We will employ group discussion as a means for exploring the value of the writing to the community.Κ Class members who are unable to react to or discuss the assigned readings will, naturally, receive low grades for that day's work: in class writings will often require students to respond to the day's reading before discussion takes place.Κ Finally, behavior that interferes with instruction of the class, including private conversations, ringing electronics, or general rudeness ("resting" eyes, placing head down, etc.) will effect the student's in class grade, and may lead to the instructor dropping the student from the class list.

EACH STUDENT MAY MISS UP TO 4 CLASSES.Κ STUDENTS WHO MISS MORE THAN 4 CLASSES WILL BE WITHDRAWN FROM THE CLASS.Κ REMEMBER: THE 4 ABSENCES ARE NOT "VACATION DAYS".Κ THEY ARE "SICK DAYS".Κ USE THEM WISELY.Κ IF YOU MISS LESS THAN 4 DAYS YOU WILL RECEIVE CREDIT TOWARD YOUR IN CLASS GRADE FOR HAVING DONE SO.

Tardiness:Κ All students who arrive after class has begun will be marked tardy, and quiz time will not be made-up.Κ Students who are more than 10 minutes late are asked not to join the class, and will not be given credit if they do so.Κ Students who leave early will be marked as absent and not receive credit for the quiz.

3 x tardy = 1 of your 4 absences.
