Course Objective:

Develop ability to write and edit standard English; to utilize the principle elements of effective writing--organization and logical expression of ideas, clear sentence structure, appropriate style and vocabulary, and correct usage of grammar, and mechanics; read literary classics with critical perception, and above all to show a college level knowledge of research and documentation methods.Κ

Mark Twain said that the man who knows how to read and does not do so has no advantage over the man who does not know how to read.Κ In this class, the student who has read the material but does not "remember anything about it" has no advantage over the person who admits to not having read the material.Κ You should: take notes as you read, attend class regularly (and pay attention while doing so), and ask questions when you do not understand something.

In class writing/quizzes/participation/general rules:

You will read a number of literary works, affording particular attention to the structure of the discourse, tone, and the meaning and persuasiveness of the work as a whole.Κ We will employ discussion as a means for exploring the value of the writing to the community.Κ Class members who are unable to react to or discuss the assigned readings will, naturally, receive low grades for that day's work.Κ Finally, behavior that interferes with instruction of the class, including private conversations, ringing electronics, or general rudeness ("resting" eyes, placing head down, etc.) will effect the student's in class grade, and may lead to the instructor dropping the student from the class list.

Text and Materials:

McMahan, Elizabeth, Susan X. Day, and Robert Funk, eds.Κ ΚΚΚΚ Literature and the Writing Process.Κ 5th Ed.Κ Upper Saddle River, N. J.: Prentice-Hall, 1999.

Any good dictionary.

Quizzes:Κ There will be a short quiz at the beginning of almost every class.Κ The quizzes will cover the day's reading, and will be short answers to generally factual questions, with an occasional paragraph required at the end.Κ The paragraphs will be graded in style, grammar, and punctuation, as well as content.Κ Quizzes cannot be made-up under any circumstances.

Tests:Κ There will be a short test covering the material of each of the first four periods studied (19th Century; Modernism; Fiction and Poetry after Modernism; Contemporary Drama), and a longer final on Shakespeare.Κ The tests will cover material covered in class.Κ

Attendance: Students who miss class cannot makeup the quiz or test missed and will receive a zero for that quiz, no matter what.Κ Students who miss class are responsible for all material covered in that class and should get class notes from a classmate.Κ While the instructor is ALWAYS willing to answer questions regarding class materials, students who cut class will not be given a private class at their convenience.

EACH STUDENT MAY MISS UP TO 3 CLASSES.Κ STUDENTS WHO MISS MORE THAN 3 CLASSES WILL BE WITHDRAWN FROM THE CLASS.Κ REMEMBER: THE 3 ABSENCES ARE NOT "VACATION DAYS". ΚTHEY ARE "SICK DAYS".Κ USE THEM WISELY.Κ IF YOU MISS LESS THAN 3 DAYS YOU WILL RECEIVE CREDIT TOWARD YOUR IN CLASS GRADE FOR HAVING DONE SO.

Tardiness:Κ All students who arrive after class has begun will be marked tardy, and quiz time will not be made-up.Κ Students who are more than 10 minutes late are asked not to join the class, and will not be given credit if they do so.Κ Students who leave class early will be marked as absent and not receive credit for the quiz.

3 X tardy = 1 of your 3 absences.

Assignments (Papers):Κ All assignments must be typed on a computer, or they will not be accepted.Κ All assignments must be double spaced, have one inch margins, and be in a standard font (no larger than this one), or will lose points as a result.Κ Papers turned in late will be docked one letter grade for each day (not class day) they are late.Κ Plagiarism will result in an "F" for the course; improper documentation will result in an automatic "F" for the paper.

All research must be done at Triton library.
