Algebra? - - - Anywhere! - - - Anytime!

The student in this class will learn to identify and apply the basic properties of the real number system. The student will learn what polynomials are, and how to perform the four basic operations with real numbers, as well as with polynomials. The student will learn about linear equations and inequalities, how to analyze them through graphing, and how to solve them. The student will also learn about quadratic equations. The student will also learn about basic geometric figures and relationships between them. Finally, the student will learn how to apply these mathematical concepts to analyze and solve a variety of problems.

Textbook and Supplies

The textbook used for this class is Elementary and Intermediate Algebra by Bittinger, Ellenbogen, and Johnson, Addison-Wesley, Second Edition (©1998). Also required is a copy of the Geometry Supplement by Bittinger and Beecher (©2000). The student may wish to use a calculator. A student who plans to take further math courses may want to consider purchasing a Texas Instruments TI-83 graphing calculator. The TI-82, TI-85, and TI-86 are similar calculators. Many students also find the Student's Solutions Manual quite helpful. Finally, a student in this class will need lots of paper. Mathematics is not a spectator sport. Mathematics can only be learned and mastered by working out lots and lots of exercises.

Attendance

This is a telecourse. It is up to you when and where you do the work for this course. That still means that you do have to do the work for the course. I need to see evidence of your active pursuit of course completion (hand in homework, take chapter tests) at least once per week or I will have to terminate your enrollment in the class.
Should you decide that you are unable to complete all the requirements of the course, and you wish to receive a W grade instead of an F, then you will need to file the necessary paperwork with Registration by Saturday, November 17, 2001. If you stop attending class, but never complete the required paperwork for withdrawal, you will receive a failing grade in this course. Don't let that happen to you.
It is your responsibility to work hard, to study your textbook and notes, to work with friends, to go to the library to consult other math books, to seek out a tutor, or to come to my office before the next class.
Expect to spend a minimum of 15 hours per week on homework and studying for this class. You need to do all the work assigned, and you have to work on it on a consistent basis, preferably daily, to have everything fall into place.

Testing

All testing for this course is done in the Independent Learning Lab, located in room L-210 West in the Liberal Art Building. You may also view the videos corresponding to our textbook in the Independent Learning Lab. The deadlines for the the tests are as follows:

  deadline
points possible
points earned
Chapter 1 Friday, September 14, 2001
100

Chapter 2 Friday, September 28, 2001
100

Chapter 3 Friday, October 12, 2001
100

Chapter 4 Friday, November 2, 2001

Final Exam Wednesday, December 19, 2001
200

If you miss the final exam you will receive a grade of F for the course, unless you have to miss the final exam for an unavoidable and documented reason and you request (no later than the time of the final exam) a grade of I. A grade of I needs to be made up within 30 days of the next semester, or it will change to a grade of F.

Grading

Your grade for this course will be determined as follows:

6 tests, valued at 100 points each, for a total of
600 points,
the homework is worth
100 points,
and the final exam is worth another
200 points,
so that you can earn a possible total of
900 points.

Your letter grade for the course will be determined as shown below, subject to the condition that your grade for the course cannot be more than one letter grade higher than the letter you earn on the Final Exam.

A
B
C
D
F

806 - 900 points
(90%)

716 - 805 points
(80%)
626 - 715 points
(70%)
536 - 626 points
(60%)
below 626 points
(less than 60%)

Homework

Below you will find a list of exercises from the textbook. You need to have completed all assigned problems for a given chapter and turn them in before you can take the test for that chapter. To receive credit for homework exercises you need to show all required steps to arrive at any answer you give.
In many cases you might have to do more than these assigned problemsto learn and master a particular topic. You will need to spend enough time with each concept until it "clicks". How long that takes will vary from person to person.

Use the Review Exercises and the Chapter Test to prepare for the exam:
ð work all the problems in the Review Exercises. Go back to the appropriate section in the book and to your notes if you have a problem with any of them. If you are shaky on a certain procedure, work some additional problems in that particular section. See a tutor or see me during office hours before the next class if you still have difficulties.
ð close your book and your notes, give yourself an hour and work through the Chapter Test problems. Compare your answers with those given in the back of the book. If you are off on any of them, find out what youâre doing wrong before the exam.

Help

One of the best ways to get help is to ask questions in class. There are very few dumb questions, so don't be shy.
Then there is the textbook. You will need to spend a lot of time reading and studying the explanations, examples, and problems in the textbook. Further resources are available at the publisher's companion website to our textbook.
Another very effective tool for learning mathematics is to get together with other students in your class to work together on problems. A good place to do this is in room R-100.
Furthermore, there are tutors available in the Math Lab in room R-100.
Hours of the Math Lab are M–Th 8 am–8 pm, F 8 am–2 pm, and Sat 8 am–2 pm.
The Math Lab also has software and videos corresponding to our textbook available. The videos are also available in the Library; for check-out (3 days) at the circulation desk, or for viewing in the Independent Learning Lab, located in room L-210 West in the Liberal Art Building.
Additional tutoring by appointment is available in the Learning Assistance Center (LAC). Finally, don't forget about your instructor. I'm available for you during my Office Hours and at any other time when I'm not teaching another class. Drop in or make an appointment, but see me before it's too late.
