Grand Tour of Italy


Day 1-2 : 
First Group: Depart Chicago from Terminal One (United Terminal) 4:15 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 22 Lufthansa Flight # 431. Arrive in Frankfort, Germany at 7:20 a.m. Depart Frankfort at 8:40 a.m. on Lufthansa Flight # 3858. Arrive in Milan (Italy) at 8:45 a.m.  Second part of group: Depart Chicago from Terminal Five (International Terminal) on Al Italia Flight #627 4:15 p.m. Arrive Milan 7:50 a.m.  Both flights will join up and be met by EF Tour Director, then set out for the magical city of Venice.
 
Day 3-4 : Venice
Stroll along the Grand Canal and through the festive bustle of St. Mark's Square. View the Venetian dukes' portraits on the wall of the Doges' Palace-the one duke whose portrait is missing was beheaded for treason. Discover why Venetian glasswork is so prized during a glassblowing demonstration. On Day 4, pass through Bologna, whose university graduated Dante, Petrarch, and Copernicus, en route to Florence, stronghold of the Medici family.

Day 5 : Florence - Pisa
View Ghiberti's stunningly carved baptistry doors, which Michelangelo called the Gates of Paradise, as you tour Florence. Stroll past the classical statues of the Piazza della Signoria-Michelangelo's David originally stood here. After attending a leather workshop, you might opt to travel to Pisa's Field of Miracles.

Day 6-7 : Assisi - Pompeii
Visit the medieval hilltop town of Assisi and learn about the life of St. Francis. On Day 7, continue on to Pompeii, an ancient Roman resort that was buried in volcanic ash when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79. Explore the site's well-preserved villas, temples, and baths. Then continue south to the seaside resort of Sorrento.

Day 8 : Capri 
Cross the Bay of Naples on an optional excursion to the exquisite Isle of Capri. Here you might journey by rowboat into the Blue Grotto. From Sorrento, transfer to Rome.

Day 9 : Rome 
Come face to face with Rome, from ancient times through the Renaissance. See the Colosseum and visit the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Roman Forum during your guided tour. On our EF walking tour, stroll through Piazza Navona, where chariot races were once held. You'll also see the Spanish Steps and the Pantheon, where the Renaissance painter Raphael is buried.

Day 10 : Rome; Day 11: Depart for home
Due to airline seat shortage, we will not be departing on Day 10 (Sunday); we will spend Easter Sunday in Rome and depart on Monday Apr. 1 from Rome at 8:45 a.m. on Lufhtansa Flight # 3941. Arrive Munich 9:55 a.m. Depart Munich at 11:15 a.m. on Lufthansa Flight # 434. Arrive Chicago at 1 p.m. Second part of group will depart Monday, Apr. 1 from Rome 9:05 a.m. on Lufthansa Flight # 3831 and arrive Frankfort 1905 a.m. Depart Frankfort on Lufthansa Flight # 430 at 10:05 a.m. and arrive Chicago 10:55 a.m..
