ECE 121: Language Development and Activities

Catalog Description:
Provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of language development,
the stages involved, the role that adults play and the relationship of
language to other aspects of development. Teaching methods are introduced
for a variety of language activities for the student to develop the skills
in preparing, presenting and evaluating, each of the languages activities.
Whole language and developmentally appropriate practices are implemented.

Course Objectives:

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of language development stages,
relationships to physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development.

Demonstrate through writing and the development of curricula an understanding
for the development of language using the theories of Piaget and Vygotsky.

Write developmental goals for a language arts ECE program with specific
performance based objectives using criteria in text and lecture.

Create and implement a variety of language arts activities for young children.

Create and implement an original language game that is child-oriented and
self-correcting and that encourages childrenās oral participation

Write and illustrate an original childās book, and demonstrate its use
in class.

Write and implement in class, language arts lesson plans that incorporate
the techniques of feltboard storytelling, puppets, finger plays and storytelling.

Demonstrate strategies to support emerging literacy and cultural diversity
of young children.

Develop an awareness of resources for language-related difficulties.
-
Evaluate childrenās books using criteria set forth in text and lectures
and handouts.
