Catalog Description:
Provides an overview of the history and philosophy of the different
types of early childhood
centers including past, present & future programs for young children
and their families.
Also included are the roles
of the early childhood professional in assessing and planning developmentally
appropriate practices to
serve young children. Guidance and observational
skills will be fostered
through field experiences.
Course Objectives:
- Observe, discuss, assess and evaluate a variety of early childhood
programs.
- Write observations of various early childhood programs.
- Describe, in writing and orally, the different program models
discussed in class and
programs observed during field observations.
- Discuss the complex role and responsibilities of a teacher
in an early childhood center.
- Elaborate on the different career opportunities in the field
of ealry hcildhood education and
child care.
- Identify programs, schedules, curriculum and classroom environment
based on
developmentally appropriate practices for infants/toddlers,
preschool and after school
programs.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of the various principles,
theories of history and philosophy
of early childhood education.
- Demonstrate evidence of understanding the impact of significant
adults on infants/toddlers,
preschoolers and school-age children.
- Discuss the major issues facing early childhood education today
and their impact on early
childhood programs.
- Identify the state and federal rules and regulations govering
early chldhood programs.
- Demonstrate the ability to plan and implement developommentally
appropriate, culturally
sensitive, anti-biase activities for young children
in infant/toddler centers, preschools,
daycare centers and kindergarten through third grade
classrooms.
- Identify and develop curriculum models and theories present
in class and text, i.e. Project
Approach, Emergent Curriculum,Themes, Units, Lesson
Plans etc.
- Identify and develop long term and short term program goals
- Develop and implement, in class, curriculum lesson plans and
projects incorporating the
following categories: Large & small motor,
math, science, dramatic play, language arts, art
and music.
