Web Design 2: Plan
Using the information gathered in the proposal phase of the project, now you need to plan the web design project.
- Site content: Define what information will be presented in the site. Determine what information is fairly static versus information that will need frequent updating. Determine if there are existing print publication processes that may also feed content into the web site.
- Assemble team: Small web projects may be accomplished by a single, talented individual. Larger projects are best designed by a team. Below are some of the critical skills needed in web site design. Some individuals selected for the team may have skills in multiple areas. All team members will need to work well together in order to produce a high-quality product.
Skill Area Sample Tasks Project Management client contact, negotiate contracts, manage budget, allocate resources, manage timelines Content Writer produce original/edited copy, set appropriate language levels, define content policies, page coding, documentation Graphic Design produce art work, design page layout, style guidelines, develop templates User Interface user requirements and specifications, user group profiles, develop user interface, coding, training Systems Engineering hardware/software configuration, security, custom applications, multimedia design, maintenance, usage statistics, system documentation - Create a timetable:
Draft a schedule for the project including due dates for the proposal, finalizing visual style and site structure, creating first draft, testing, review by entire team, final testing, and rollout. Build into the schedule multiple opportunities for client review and for testing with key user groups.
