WELCOME!

Introductory Microbiology is designed to investigate the major groups of microorganisms and their impact in the natural world. The morphology, physiology and clinical aspects of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses will be presented. In the laboratory, you will learn aseptic technique and the use of the microscope, as well as other tools essential to the microbiologist. Staining and culturing of bacteria is emphasized, and you will learn how to identify unknown microorganisms in a mixed culture.

A basic understanding of the use of compound light microscope, basic biology and chemistry, cells, cell division, and genetics is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. If you are unfamiliar with the aforementioned your are encouraged to contact me in advance for advice on sources of supplemental material. Note that, although it may be seen as a disadvantage, being unfamiliar with the entry level competencies means that you may have to double the efforts in order to make the best of my course.

My course is also ‘HIGHLY ENHANCED’ and includes complementary and supplemental material found online through Blackboard, our course manager. Therefore, additional to the competencies mentioned above, proficiency in computers (Macintosh and/or PC), as well as familiarity with common word processors (Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Microsoft Works, etc.), slide show presentation (Microsoft PowerPoint) and spreadsheet programs (Microsoft Excel) will be advantageous for you.
