Introduction to Poetry

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Course is designed to introduce students to poetry so that they may read, understand, critique and enjoy it. Students are exposed to a range of British and American poets and given a framework and vocabulary from which they may intelligently approach poetry.

Introduction to Poetry - by Kennedy and Gioia

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS REQUIRED: One 3 1/2" disk, and any collegiate dictionary.

OBJECTIVES:

To develop a real interest in, and respect for, poetry

To develop aesthetic judgment, enabling the student to analyze, critique, and understand the qualities of poetry and poems

To write well developed poetry analysis/interpretation essays

To gain proficiency in the English language, both oral and written

To increase self-awareness of others

To gain confidence

To respond to poetry

To nurture creativity and imagination in self and others
