Introduction to Poetry

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Course is designed to introduce students to poetry so that they may read, understand, critique and enjoy it.  Students are exposed to a range of British and American poets and given a framework and vocabulary from which they may intelligently approach poetry.

Introduction to Poetry - by Kennedy and Gioia
ADDITIONAL MATERIALS REQUIRED:  One 3 1/2" disk, and any collegiate dictionary.

OBJECTIVES:

    • To develop a real interest in, and respect for, poetry
    • To develop aesthetic judgment, enabling the student to analyze, critique, and understand the qualities of poetry and poems
    • To write well developed poetry analysis/interpretation essays
    • To gain proficiency in the English language, both oral and written
    • To increase self-awareness of others
    • To gain confidence
    • To respond to poetry
    • To nurture creativity and imagination in self and others
