RHETORIC 096: DEVELOPMENTAL WRITING

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to assist you in further development of your writing skills.  Emphasis will be placed on the use of logical, unified, coherent, writing skills for competency in any personal, school, or professional situations.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

To generate and discover information

 

To select and develop a workable subject

 

To focus the material

 

To develop the paragraph effectively through unity and coherence

 

To develop the essay through the effective use of organization, unity, coherence, and a strong conclusion

 

To edit and proofread effectively

 

To demonstrate competent word processing skills

 

To write in expository, narrative, and descriptive modes

 

To gain confidence in your writing

 

To develop a more extensive vocabulary

 

REQUIRED TEXT AND MATERIALS:

COLLEGE WRITING SKILLS ‑ LANGAN

 (1) BLANK DISK 3.5"

 

PAPER, PEN OR PENCIL, POCKET DICTIONARY (OPTIONAL)


CLASS ATTENDANCE:

Class attendance is mandatory.  Maximum cuts without penalty (2).  (TWO (2) class cuts ) will result in a CONFERENCE with me and an explanation of possible consequences. Three or more cuts will subject you to possible termination from the course.

 

YOU MUST PARTICIPATE ACTIVELY!

 

COURSE GRADES:

 

A, B, C, R.  An (R) means the student cannot move on to RHT 101.  Your final grade will be determined by the semester grade accumulated through grammar exercises, graded essays, vocabulary quizzes and your FINAL ESSAY.

 

ASSIGNMENTS:

 

Most assignments Will be given in class.  If you are not present, it is your responsibility to call and get the assignment for the next class meeting.  The assignments must be done on time if you want full credit towards your final grade.

 

CONFERENCES:

 

When a conference is assigned or requested, you must either meet the time assigned or communicate the desire to reschedule or cancel.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS:

You will be required to conduct your self according to Triton's Student Handbook. There will be no cell phone use in the classroom. You must show proper respect for your classmates at all times. You must come prepared everyday to do your classwork by having your book available, pen or pencil, and something to write on.

 

GRADING SCALE:

 

90‑100  = A

80‑   89 = B

70‑   79 = C

60‑   69 = D

59‑     0 = F

FINAL ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE PROGRESS MADE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF INDIVIDUAL ESSAYS
