MEP Construction Technology

Students complete a partial set of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection construction documents for a commercial building. Mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection fabrication and installation trade skills will be taught.

Prerequisite: ARC109 and ARC110 or concurrent enrollment

Course Outline:

Introduction to mechanical, plumbing, and electrical design for buildings
Produce floor plan base drawings for overlays
Create reflected ceiling and lighting plans
Elevator design and selection
Code analysisMechanical heating and cooling options; energy conservation; solar energy and other renewal energy resources
Heat loss calculations and sizing heating ductwork
Lighting theory and selection of light fixtures
Plumbing Codes and sizing plumbing
Specifications writing
Safety training; bend and install electrical conduit; wire devices
Brake form sheet metal ductwork, hang and insulate
Fabricate sheet metal roofing, and install; install metal gutters and downspouts
Galvanized metal and black iron piping; PVC piping; valves
Sprinkler calculations, design, fabrication and installation

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Calculate heat loss for a building.

Size heating ducts and plumbing pipes.

Select light fixtures.

Prepare a code analysis.

Realize potential acoustical problems.

Write a sample specification for Mechanical, Electrical or Plumbing section of the technical specifications for a building.

Bend and install electrical conduit.

Pull wires through conduits and wire electrical devices.

Brake form sheet metal for ductwork, and hang from ceiling

Insulate ductwork.

Fabricate fiberglass ductwork

Fabricate and install sheet metal roofing

Fabricate sheet metal gutters and downspouts

Cut and braze copper water pipe, and hang.

Cut and thread galvanized and black iron piping

Install plumbing valves and accessories

Install plumbing fixtures

Cut and glue PVC plumbing piping, and hang.

Insulate piping.

Fabricate and install sprinkler fittings and valves
