What is social psychology?

"To a greater extent than any other field, social psychology studies the events and processes that comprise people's everyday lives. Social psychologists study feeling and thinking, belief and disbelief, truth and beauty, love and hate, conflict and cooperation, communication and deception, pride and prejudice, and an endless list of other things which impact on people's lives in the most direct way." C. McGarty & S.A. Haslam, The Message of Social Psychology.

In this course, we will look at:

  1. Theory and empirical research about social factors that influence individual and group behavior.

  2. Topics such as attittude formation and change, social cognition, social motives, interpersonal relationships, and group development, dynamics and social influence.

Here is how your grade will be determined --

* Late quizzes will not be accepted. Lowest quiz grade is dropped.. Quizzes can only be taken online.

What is the attendance policy?

Regular class attendance is essential for success in this course. You will be penalized .05 in your grade point average at the end of the semester for every absence after four missed classes.

How do I get into the online class for quizzes and writing assignments?

You can get into the online course from anywhere that you have a computer with internet access (home, Triton's library and computer labs, public libraries, work, etc.). You do not even need to have an email account. There is a private email within the course that you can use to contact me if you need to. To access the online class, you need to go to the following address:

http://online.triton.edu:8900/public/PSY201goehmann/index.html

Once at this site, you should click on Log In. This will open a login box that will ask for your user name and password. Your user name is your first and last name (all lower case and no space between names - it is your formal name as registered for the class). Your password is the first letter of your first name, the first three letters of your last name and the last 4 digits of your social security number.

You should try to access the website as soon as possible and notify instructor if there is a problem. You will not be given extended time for assignments or quizzes due to not accessing the course in a timely manner.
