Architectural
Lettering -
Style of hand lettering/writing that is particular and standard
to Architectural and Interior Design Drawings.
Center
of Vision (C) -
The center axis within the viewers field of vision.
Cone
of Vision (COV) -
The view captured within the viewer's field of vision.
Diagonal
Vanishing Point (DVP) -
The vanishing point for 45 degree lines which cut off equal section
of right triangles.
Dimension
-
Drawing information that gives the size and/or location of elements
in plans, elevations, sections and details.
Dimension
Line -
Line drawn between the two extension lines that extend past the
extension lines. At the intersection of the two lines place a dark
tick mark drawn freehand at a 45 degree angle.
Dimension
String -
A line of continuous dimensions. Dimension strings are closed or
open. A closed string gives every dimension along the string while
an open string gives only the dimension need for size or location.
Dimension
Text -
A number representing the length of the dimension. Use 3/32" architectural
lettering.
Elevation
-
A view of the building from the front, back or side.
Elevation
Oblique -
Paraline oblique drawing where parallel lines are projected from
the elevation at a 45 degree angle.
Extension
Lines -
Lines drawn perpendicular to the dimensioned part.
Freehand
Sketching -
Drawing with only pencil and paper without the tools of manual drafting.
Ground
Line (GL)-
The intersection of the picture plane and the ground plane.
Horizon
Line (HL)-
The intersection of the picture plane and a horizontal plane through
the eye of the viewer based on the height of the viewer.
Isometric
Drawings -
Paraline Drawings using 30/60 degree angles.
Line
Weight -
Primary/Secondary/Rendition. The weight/thickness of the line communicates
architectural information.
Line
Quality -
Crispness/Blackness/Density. The quality of the line is in its consistency
and appropriate line weight.
Measure
Line -
The only true-scale line in a perspective drawing. The measure line
is located on the picture plane. In the common method vertical measuring
lines are used.
Oblique
Drawings -
Paraline drawing using 45 degree angles.
One
Point Perspective -
3-dimensional drawing that uses one vanishing points. Mainly used
for interior views.
Orthographic
Projection -
Drawing method used for plan/section/elevation drawings. This method
uses right angles, parallel lines and perpendicular drawing surfaces.
Overall
Dimension -
A dimension that shows the whole width or length of an element.
The overall dimension is always drawn furthest out from the dimensioned
element.
Paraline
Drawings -
3-dimensional drawings where parallel lines remain parallel - Isometric
and Oblique
Perspective
Drawings -
3 dimensional drawing that is constructed using vanishing points.
Plan
Oblique -
Paraline oblique drawing where parallel lines are projected from
the plan at a 45 degree angle.
Plan
View -
A view from above the building after a horizontal cut has been made
4' above the floor and the top part has been removed.
Scale
-
Drawings
are scaled so that the plan or elevation can be drawn on a standard
sheet of paper. Architectural scales are generally given in fractions
and Engineering scales are generally given in whole numbers.
Section
-
A view of the building after a vertical cut has been made and the
front, back or side part has been removed.
Station
Point -
Locates the fixed point of the viewer. It should be off-center to
avoid a static view.
Top
View -
A view of the building from above.
Two
Point Perspective -
3-dimensional drawing that uses two vanishing points. Mainly used
for exterior views.
Vanishing
Point -
VP Points at which parallel lines appear to meet in perspective.
